Compensate Foundation

We create practical tools for tackling the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.

What we do

The Compensate Foundation advances the development of carbon and biodiversity markets by creating mechanisms that enable true accountability for companies, individuals, and organizations. We actively help shape the dialogue and decision-making that will define how these markets evolve.

We create guides, events, training, and services that equip diverse actors to operate responsibly in the market. Recognized internationally as a thought leader in carbon markets, our expertise is sought after both in Finland and around the world.

Forest Value Service

A digital service helps forest owners to identify the most biodiverse areas in their forests. It also highlights the emerging biodiversity markets and possibilities to get revenue for maintaining biodiversity.

A Podcast: How to change the world?

Focusing on problems alone won’t halt the climate crisis or biodiversity loss. When we shift our energy toward concrete solutions, we drive the transformative change our planet urgently needs.

A Guide: Truthful environmental claims

A practical guide for businesses on using legally compliant environmental claims and on concrete work behind those claims.

About Us

The Compensate Foundation is a non-profit expert organization whose mission is to mitigate climate change and biodiversity loss. We create practical tools for taking responsibility for environmental impacts.

We engage in active, multi-level advocacy to develop credible and transparent market mechanisms to help halt the climate crisis and biodiversity loss. We promote the credibility standards for voluntary carbon markets and support the development of the natural value market. We work closely with policymakers, authorities, the media, NGOs, and businesses.

The foundation is primarily funded through grants and donations. Our most recent supporters include Adventurous Ideas Oy, Relex Foundation, Kone Foundation, and Tiina and Antti Herlin Foundation.

A Digital Service

Forest Value Service

A digital service helps forest owners to identify the most biodiverse areas in their forests. It also highlights the emerging biodiversity markets and possibilities to get revenue for maintaining biodiversity.

Forest Value Service assesses the forest’s potential in emerging natural value markets. The assessment is based on the Finnish Forest Centre’s open forest resource data and a new Nature Value Hectare metrics developed in Finland. The service also includes tools and guidance for more sustainable forest management and provides information on current compensation for conservation.

Forest Value Service (Metsän Arvo) is free and open to everyone. You can try it without a property ID. The service is currently available only in Finnish.

The podcast is hosted by Annukka Valkeapää, Doctor of Social Sciences and Executive Director of the Compensate Foundation. Each episode features a guest expert who knows the success story inside out. The podcast is funded by the RELEX Foundation.

The episodes are available in Finnish, but you can read blog posts about each solution in English.

A Guide

Truthful environmental claims

A practical guide for businesses on using legally compliant environmental claims and on concrete work behind those claims.

Climate and nature claims are in transition. Regulation concerning claims has tightened, and consumers expect truthful and clear communication on sustainability work, as well as concrete actions behind the claims.

The guide provides an overview of the current and future regulation of climate and nature claims, as well as effective nature work behind those claims. It also presents key principles for making climate and nature claims. It was developed in collaboration with Laininen Law Oy and Luontoa Oy.
